Creative Scholarships Worth $10,000 for Literary and Visual Arts

February 15, 2012

The Alliance for Young Artist and Writers often have challenges for students with prizes like the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. American students who are in middle and high school are eligible to enter and actually win a national recognition for the creative work. However, the grand prize is a $10,000 scholarship for students to use in pursuit of a college education.

Teen artists and writers have a lot of scholarship opportunities, which will state that they are specifically for high school students. The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers focuses on the gifted talents of young students. To win the scholarship, you can submit art and literature to over 25 categories, which range from painting, video game design, journalism, poetry and personal essays. Graduating seniors will also be able to submit an art or writing portfolio in absence of a single work.

These awards have been around since 1923. In almost eight decades, the organization has given recognition to students who have become some of America’s most artistic writers and visual artists. Joyce Carol Oates, Andy Warhol and Robert Redford were just some of the students to have won this award in the past. Usually, the second week of September will reveal the announcement for the award through the Scholastic Art & Writing Award program.

A variety of awards are offered through the program. There are over 50,000 students who will receive recognition on a regional level. An additional 1,300 students will earn national awards. Students are then honored at public events and regional and national ceremonies, many winners will have the opportunity to have their artwork displayed in exhibitions. There will be 60 regional arts exhibitions in museums and galleries across the country with a final showing in the national show in New York City.

Lucky winners will earn prizes that range from $500 to $10,000. The largest awards will come in the form of undergraduate tuition scholarships for graduating seniors who earn Portfolio Gold Metals in photography, general writing, art and non-fiction categories. Awards that range from $250 to $1,000 are also offered to sponsored teachers. More than 90 teens from grades 7 to 11 will actually win a full-ride to summer art and writing camps in addition to the scholarships.

The award is incredibly prestigious and requires that participants follow strict guidelines that have been developed over almost 100 years. Students who do win can show off their awards along with a good transcript and use their scholarship money towards college tuition in the future.

You can visit the Scholastic Art and Writing awards website to see all of the awards and events available for this year’s award, which is coming up this fall. Most students will start preparing a piece now, continuously working on something until the final reveal. Students can get an early start and apply early for recognition as well.
