Grants for Minorities

There are new grants every year for minorities, and there are multiple organizations who continuously provide for different ethnic groups seeking education assistance. Typical minorities who receive grants include African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, Native Americans and other disadvantaged groups, such as persons with disabilities. Both private and government awards are available to minorities with awards that range on average from $500 to $2,000 per year. Other minority students may find its best to contact their college adviser for details on grants based locally.

Grants for African Americans

Some of the most well-known grants are award from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). This organization has over 40 private, historically black colleges and universities connected to its organization. Not only that, but UNCF provides multiple scholarships, including the AFSCME/UNCF/Harvard University Union Scholars Program. Their fellowships, grants and scholarships are continuously updated on the UNCF website. If you have applied for many of these grants already, you can find other educational grant opportunities through Frederick Douglass Scholars Program, Mordecai Wyatt Johnson Program, The National Black Nurses Association and the March of Dimes Nursing Scholarships.

Grants for Hispanics

The educational opportunities for latinos continue to grow every year. While the funding has been significantly lower than for African Americans, hispanic students still receive multiple grant and scholarship opportunities through government and private organizations. Some of these programs include Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Hispanic Nurses Association, March of Dimes Nursing Scholarship program, Scholarship for Disadvantaged Students, Silicon Valley Scholarship and the Jose Marti Challenge Grant.

Grants for Asian Americans

Multiple educational grant opportunities are opening up for Asian Americans, which typically apply to the following ethnic groups, though not all who qualify may be mentioned: Asian Indian, Bangladeshi, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indo Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Vietnamese and Malaysian. The U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC) has stepped up its efforts for financial assistance to these ethnic groups and has provided assistance to Asian Americans since 1989. Some of these scholarships and grants include the Association for Asian Studies, Asian American Federation of New York, Asian American Journalist's Association, Southeast Asian Studies Regional Exchange Program, Luisa Mallari Fellowship, Bruce Lee Scholarship, Jacki Chan Scholarship and Telamon Scholarship.

Grants for Native Americans

As well as with other grants, Native Americans also have the task of proving their ancestry to receive a minority grant with a Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB). Native American applicants must also belong to a well-recognized tribe. If you qualify, you are eligible for these minority grants, Tribal Colleges Education Equity Grants, Indian Adult Education, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Grants, Minority Science and Engineering Improvement grants.

Other Disadvantaged Groups

Many grants also apply to persons with disabilities. Your disability may be physical or mental, but financial assistance is available through different charities, government programs and private organizations. Some well-known grants are available through the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, National Federation of the Blind, Jewish Guild for the Blind, Harry Truman Scholarship Program and other disability-specific organizations.

While minority students may feel disadvantaged, these programs exist to help and inspire students to continue their education. Financial assistance is available to those who are willing to spend time on an application and put in the effort to meet the requirements.
